I went looking for a Candle with a Playlist. I couldn't find one. So I made one.
There are a lot of candles in the world. Like… a lot.
Beautiful candles, fancy candles, candles that smell like expensive hotels, candles that smell like dessert, and candles with names that require a minor existential crisis to understand.
So when I decided to step back into the candle world, I knew one thing: I didn't want to make just another candle.
I'd actually done that before.
This Wasn't My First Candle Company
Years ago, when my youngest was just eight weeks old, I started Mishy Moo's Candle Company. What began during those very early newborn days, grew into a business that I ran for years, right up until she started primary school.
And then life changed. A lot.
There was COVID, the end of a 21-year relationship, kids growing up, and somewhere amongst all of that, Mishy Moo's came to an end too. For a while, candle making became part of a previous chapter of my life.
But apparently I wasn't quite finished with it.
Eventually, I found myself thinking about creating again. The problem was, the candle world had changed significantly since Mishy Moo's. It had become incredibly saturated — it felt like every man and their dog were making candles. There were beautiful candle brands everywhere, and I knew I didn't want to come back simply to add another candle to an already crowded shelf.
If I was going to do it again, I wanted to create something genuinely different. Something that felt like me.
And that's where music came in.
Why Candles and Music?
I've always loved music and the way a song can completely change how a moment feels. I started wondering what would happen if you paired a candle with a playlist?
Surely someone was already doing it?
So I searched. And while I found versions of the idea overseas, I couldn't find an Australian candle brand doing what I had in my head.
I remember thinking, “Why isn't this being done?”
Which was very quickly followed by, “Well… why don't I do it?”
And that was the beginning of Now Spinning Candle Company.
The more I thought about combining music and fragrance, the more it made sense. They actually have something pretty incredible in common: both have the ability to transport you somewhere else almost instantly.
You know when a song comes on and suddenly you're 17 again? You're in a particular car, at a particular party, thinking about a particular person, or remembering a summer you haven't thought about in years. Or you're singing every single word to a song you apparently haven't forgotten despite not hearing it since 1988.
Fragrance does exactly the same thing. A certain perfume can remind you of someone instantly. A smell can put you straight back in your childhood home. And some fragrances can transport you directly back to wandering around the shops in the '90s and smelling White Musk approximately 14 metres before you reached the store.
Music creates memories. Scent creates memories.
So why not put the two together?
And Now Spinning Was Born
The idea behind Now Spinning became pretty simple: candles with a soundtrack.
But I didn't want to just stick a random playlist onto a candle and call it a day. The music needed to be part of the experience.
Every Now Spinning candle is paired with its own carefully curated playlist, chosen to complement the fragrance and the feeling behind it. You light your candle, scan the QR code, choose your streaming platform and press play. The fragrance fills the room, the music starts, and the wood wick softly crackles in the background.
Suddenly, you're not just burning a candle. You've created a moment.
And before you ask — no, I'm not telling you what's on the playlists!
The playlists are deliberately kept a surprise. There's something about scanning that code for the first time and not knowing exactly what you're going to hear that has become part of the Now Spinning experience.
I spend a ridiculous amount of time curating them so the songs work together and, most importantly, feel right with the fragrance. Sometimes the connection is obvious, sometimes it isn't. You might hear a song you haven't thought about in years, or you might discover something completely new.
That's the point.
More Than Just a Candle
Sound became part of the physical candle too. Every Now Spinning candle has a crackling wood wick, so alongside the playlist you get that soft little crackle as the candle burns. It's a small detail, but it's one of my favourites.
The flame, the crackle, the fragrance and the music all work together to turn something as simple as lighting a candle into a little ritual.
Nostalgia has naturally become a big part of Now Spinning too. I love creating fragrances and playlists that remind you of something — a place, an era, a person, a memory, or something you'd completely forgotten about until a smell or a song brings it flooding back.
It's also why I don't think candles need to take themselves too seriously.
They don't all need beige labels, mysterious names and descriptions about wandering barefoot through an ancient forest at dusk. Sometimes you just want something that smells incredible, plays great music and makes you happy.
That's perfectly fine with me.
A New Chapter, A New Soundtrack
Today, Now Spinning candles are hand-poured in Melbourne using soy wax and crackling wood wicks, with every fragrance paired with its own curated soundtrack.
And I still get a kick out of explaining the concept to someone for the first time.
“Wait… the candle has a playlist?”
Yep. It does.
What started with me searching for something I thought surely must already exist became an entirely new chapter of my candle-making story.
Mishy Moo's belonged to one chapter of my life. Now Spinning belongs to this one.
And in a funny way, after everything that happened in between, the name feels even more appropriate.
New chapter. New soundtrack. Now Spinning.
